I bought a set of bowls from South Africa some years ago and have been trying to track down the makers ever since. Recently I found them; they are Storm in a Teacup.
Sue, the owner, begins her work on the potter's wheel and from there, the shapes evolve. She experiments with different clay bodies and lustrous warm glazes; the combination of black clay looks stunning with the soft grey glaze. I love the way she teams the ceramic cup with a rough cut jacaranda wood saucer. Sue pays attention to the small details, for instance the little thumb print in the espresso cup to help you grip it when drinking.
I spent a happy morning with Sue at her shop in Jo'burg, selecting this range of cups and mugs which would be perfect for warming drinks on cold winter days. The elegant clay shapes and smooth glazes feel beautiful as you wrap your hands around them.
